Wanting to escape the gloomy, cold rain at home, we decided to take another quick trip! After working on Thursday, we jetted off for an overnight in Wilmington, NC. We were fortunate to score first-class seats twice, main-cabin extra once, and an entire row to ourselves in economy class. Part of what made this possible was choosing a destination with practically empty planes. Even though technically it took a similar amount of time to get to Wilmington as driving would have, we have learned to enjoy the travel experience of flying, so the transitional time was far more enjoyable. Getting great seats also helps.
Upon arrival, we picked up our rental vehicle. However, the rental place was short of rental cars, so we ended up with a van, which was a first. After a restful night in a hotel, we ventured outside to enjoy some parfaits for breakfast by the riverfront. The weather was a noticeable upgrade from the rain we had left behind. It was 70⁰, sunny, and very windy. We meandered along the riverwalk and went into a few shops. We were surprised that we found a souvenir: a cloud cat toy for our beloved feline friend.
Riverwalk/Seafood
While walking on the riverwalk, we spotted our first pelican of the day and saw a battleship in the distance. We strolled past the dinner cruises pondering returning in the future for a boat ride. Eventually, it was time for lunch. Veering off the riverwalk, we entered The George on the Riverwalk to indulge in several seafood dishes. We even tried gator for the first time! The seafood tasted exceptionally fresh, having a succulence unique to the coast. We chose to eat inside the restaurant due to the wind. The restaurant also had a beautiful patio overlooking the riverwalk that would be marvelous on a sunny, calm day.
Historic District
Satisfied with our lunch, we continued on to explore the Historic District in Wilmington. We strolled past beautiful buildings in a variety of architectural styles. There were beautiful churches along the streets. We were fortunate to be there when the azaleas were in full bloom. The colorful flowers against the backdrop of the historic buildings was a magnificent sight. Dazzled by the sightseeing, I lost my footing and fell to the ground. Slightly embarrassed, we quickly made our way back to the van.
Beaches
Completing our time downtown, we drove a half hour until we reached the Wilmington beach boardwalk. More coastal in feel, the beach had a different kind of charm. We enjoyed swinging on a porch swing by the beach and walking on the boardwalk and the sand by the impressive ocean waves. There were a couple more pelicans and seabirds flying around. Some brave people were swimming.
After the boardwalk, we hopped into the van and went to the Fort Fisher Recreation Reserve. This area may have been the highlight of our adventure. We watched as kite surfers defied gravity on the ocean. We meandered on sandy trails and enjoyed seeing native plants in a less disturbed beach environment. After soaking in the last of the sun and nature for the day before heading back to the airport. It was a full day, but we emerged refreshed and still had two more days of the weekend to prepare for the work week at home. Quick trips like this are a lovely way to escape on a budget and still have time for all your day-to-day responsibilities.

Beach Day
Hop aboard a plane, And fly over to the beach. Leave a day of rain, There is everything to gain! Hear the waves go back and forth, Taste the local catch. See a pelican up north, And feel the ocean's breeze. What could possibly be better, Then a day spent on the beach? Wandering as non-revver, Wishing the day would never cease. We go where the plane takes us, Sometimes getting there. Escaping the monotony, Only if we dare.-Poem by Michelle
