Embarking on an Exciting Exploration of the Charms of Wilmington, North Carolina

Wanting to escape the gloomy, cold rain at home, we decided to take another quick trip! After working on Thursday, we jetted off for an overnight in Wilmington, NC. We were fortunate to score first-class seats twice, main-cabin extra once, and an entire row to ourselves in economy class. Part of what made this possible was choosing a destination with practically empty planes. Even though technically it took a similar amount of time to get to Wilmington as driving would have, we have learned to enjoy the travel experience of flying, so the transitional time was far more enjoyable. Getting great seats also helps.

Upon arrival, we picked up our rental vehicle. However, the rental place was short of rental cars, so we ended up with a van, which was a first. After a restful night in a hotel, we ventured outside to enjoy some parfaits for breakfast by the riverfront. The weather was a noticeable upgrade from the rain we had left behind. It was 70⁰, sunny, and very windy. We meandered along the riverwalk and went into a few shops. We were surprised that we found a souvenir: a cloud cat toy for our beloved feline friend.

Beaches

Completing our time downtown, we drove a half hour until we reached the Wilmington beach boardwalk. More coastal in feel, the beach had a different kind of charm. We enjoyed swinging on a porch swing by the beach and walking on the boardwalk and the sand by the impressive ocean waves. There were a couple more pelicans and seabirds flying around. Some brave people were swimming.

Beach Day

Hop aboard a plane,

And fly over to the beach.

Leave a day of rain,

There is everything to gain!

Hear the waves go back and forth,

Taste the local catch.

See a pelican up north,

And feel the ocean's breeze.

What could possibly be better,

Then a day spent on the beach?

Wandering as non-revver,

Wishing the day would never cease.

We go where the plane takes us,

Sometimes getting there.

Escaping the monotony,

Only if we dare.
